Beneath God’s wings…….

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!  (Matthew 23:37) RSV

A friend sent me the above picture, and I was so touched that I wanted to share it.  Of course, the dove is not a hen, but the photo still reminds me so much of Our Lord’s Words, quoted above.
And, this picture also brings to mind the antiphon and psalm for Night Prayer on Sundays and Solemnities.  (See below.)  It is so lovely to imagine sleeping beneath God’s wings….  And the sweet picture of the dove and her chicks is so touching.
Imagine, of all the images Jesus could have chosen to illustrate His longing to protect His people, He did not choose a sturdy oak, or a mother lion…things we associate with strength.
No…He chose a simple hen gathering her chicks beneath her wings.  And what does that reveal about the God we love and serve.. and His Precious Heart….and His tenderness toward us?

PSALM 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High and abides in the shade of the Almighty says to the Lord: “My refuge, my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!”

It is he who will free you from the snare of the fowler who seeks to destroy you; he will conceal you with his pinions and under his wings you will find refuge.

You will not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the plague that prowls in the darkness nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand fall at your right, you, it will never approach; his faithfulness is buckler and shield.

Your eyes have only to look to see how the wicked are repaid, you who have said: “Lord, my refuge!” and have made the Most High your dwelling.

Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels, to keep you in all your ways.

They shall bear you upon their hands lest you strike your foot against a stone. On the lion and the viper you will tread and trample the young lion and the dragon.

Since he clings to me in love, I will free him; protect him for he knows my name. When he calls I shall answer: “I am with you,” I will save him in distress and give him glory.

With length of life I will content him; I shall let him see my saving power.

  1. This is beautiful. I wish I had words for what I feel when I look at that incredible photo while thinking of God holding me under His wings. But I don’t… so these sentences will have to do….

    • Nancy, I know. I feel the same way. What is that about a picture being worth a thousand words…..
Thanks for commenting. I missed all of you so much…but remembered everyone in prayer in so many beautiful churches. xo

  2. It is a pretty picture. Looks like a dove, although a multi-colored one. I love Psalm 91. I remember singing the song that probably Dan Schutte wrote, “You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord my refuge, my rock in whom I trust. And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hands.” I was singing it at work after reading it in one of the Universalis reading. As it was after hours, didn’t realize that the person over the file cabinets from me was still there. He asked me if I sang in the choir at church or something. Whoops! He was nice. We actually got along better work-wise after that. Couldn’t help it. Just have to sing when you see words that beautiful and comforting sometimes.

    • Hi Colleen, yes I’m pretty sure it’s a dove….looks just like the doves at my feeder, only it’s more tropical with such bright colors. God’s handiwork is soooo exquisite! So you’re a singer, huh? If I was caught singing, no one would ever ask if I was in the church choir. They would know for sure that I couldn’t possibly be in any choir. One of my dreams of heaven is to be able to sing on key! 🙂

I remember the song you mentioned. It was very popular in the 90’s around here. Psalm 91 is so comforting. I love the psalms..there is one for every circumstance in life. I hope you are doing well. Keeping you in prayer always….

      Hugs and prayers…xoxo

  3. What a precious picture, Patricia.. So appropriate for us to understand in our times; He longs to take us under His wings and it grieves Him when we are not willing. ( Matt 23:37)
Thank you for reminding me where our refuge is!
Love and Blessings and I missed you +

    • I went to sleep thinking about that dove last night. I so want to be beneath the shelter of His wings! Imagine, when God created the birds and gave them wings to shelter their young, He must have been thinking about us. But then, there never was a moment when He wasn’t thinking about us! Blessed are we!

I missed you too! It was wonderful visiting so many beautiful churches and being able to pray for everyone. There were some days that I really was able to make a Eucharisitc holy hour…just divided among 4 or 5 different churches though 🙂 Hope to share a bit about our trip soon. xoxo
